Stress Study

Study Description

The purpose of this research study is to identify key personality traits that are best suited for the responsibilities and duties carried out by military combat medics. An Institutional Review Board responsible for human subjects research at The University of Arizona reviewed this research project and found it to be acceptable, according to applicable state and federal regulations and University policies designed to protect the rights and welfare of participants in research. The entire study is split between three visits, with the screening visit occurring at the UAHS College of Medicine 7th floor and two testing visits at the UAHS Center for Sleep and Circadian Sciences with roughly one week between the screening and testing visits.

The screening visit to the UAHS College of Medicine will last 3-4 hours and will involve personality assessments, cognitive assessments, answering basic demographic and intake questions pertaining to health history, sleep history, and drug, alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine use history. At the end of the screening visit, we will provide you with an Actiwatch, which is a wrist activity monitor that measures your wake, sleep, and movement patterns. You will be asked to return roughly one week after the screening visit for two consecutive testing visits. Each visit will begin at 9:45 AM to approximately 3:00 PM. For two nights prior to your first testing visit, you will be required to go to bed between 10 PM and 11 PM and wake no later than 8 AM the following morning and get at least 6 hours of sleep. You will also be asked to follow this scheduled on the night between each testing visit. The testing visits will be an extension of the screening visit where you will be asked to complete more personality assessments and a series of cognitive performance assessments. The study will conclude at the end of the second testing visit with a debriefing.

The total compensation for full completion of this study and being an alternate, if applicable, is up to $360, which will be provided as a check in the mail after you successfully complete the study and return all of the test equipment.
